What is a MOAL Party?

MOAL is an acronym for Mount Olive Area LAN. LAN is an acronym for Local Area Network. Party as defined by Webster's Dictionary is "A social gathering especially for pleasure or amusement".

MOAL Party is an event commonly called a LAN Party. At MOAL Party, we usually meet once every 4 to 6 weeks. Each participant brings a computer or console system and connects it to a LAN. On the LAN, people are able to play multi-player video games and share files with each other.

MOAL Party offers a social aspect as well. People can come and enjoy themselves. There will be plenty of drinks and food. Music will also be provided. We also offer game tournaments and competitions, prizes provided by sponsors, free computer support and advice.

MOAL Party is not a gaming center. It is more of a club or gathering.

What is the purpose of a LAN party?

LAN parties are events that are growing in popularity around the world. Computers are becoming more powerful and more affordable. Computers and even game systems are networkable as a standard. With the Internet, gamers are able to easily play each other in most newer games.

Playing against other human players introduces a new level of excitement. Unfortunately, playing over the Internet introduces "lag". Connecting on a LAN offers extremely fast speeds for computers to communicate with each other.

Also, at LAN parties you can show off or see other people's computers, case mods, the latest hardware, meet new friends, and ultimately scream in the guy's face who is sitting next to you at how you are the ultimate gamer!

Who organizes MOAL Party?

Many people are needed to make MOAL Party run well. Everyone who volunteers their time, make MOAL Party the best LAN party in the area.

Chris Burcham (Chrisb_Chicken) is a MOAL Party co-event organizer and Administrator. He and Paul oversee all aspects of the events. Chris is also the webmaster of this site.

Paul Smith ([MP] Spartan) is a MOAL Party co-event organizer and administrator. He and Chris oversee all aspects of the events.

James B. Jones III (Rambo) is the vice-event organizer. He helps Chris and Paul with the set-up. He is also part of the event security.

Alli Newberry (Vixie_1600) is an event cleanup coordinator and LAN party cook. She takes care of a lot of the clean-up work, making sure MOAL Party is tidy and oversees that everyone that comes, is up to MOAL Party standards and fed. (Girls happen to clean up LAN parties better than any guys. And yes, girls are gamers too.)

Amanda Smith ([MP] SpartansWife) is an event cleanup coordinator. She takes care of a lot of the clean-up work, making sure MOAL Party is tidy and oversees that everyone that comes, is up to MOAL Party standards. Do we need help setting up \ tearing down?

YES! A lot of work is required when setting up for a MOAL Party. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Chris Burcham. You can also show up an hour or two before events and help with setup.

We need people who can help transport boxes and totes of equipment, set up equipment, hang banners, clean up, and provide food, snacks and drinks.

We currently only have The MOAL Hole as a location for now We're still looking for a new hall in the Mt. Olive area to host at though. If you have a large basement you would like to volunteer as a location or know of a hall we approach for hosting events, please contact Chris Burcham.

Where can I eat?

Snacks will be provided at the event. We usually will have soda and chips available for you to enjoy at your leisure. We provide meals for our LAN goers throughout the event If people don't like what we're serving, we'll sometimes collect money and order some pizzas or do a food run.

What equipment does MOAL Party use?

MOAL Party networks are based on a 10/100TX architecture consisting of the following equipment:

(1) Netgear 10/100 5-port workgroup switch

Please keep in mind that the equipment is very expensive. Avoid any possible damage to equipment by not tampering with or doing possibly endangering acts to the equipment near it [ie. rough-housing, placing food or drink in close proximity, etc].

Will an Internet connection be available?

If the event is held at The MOAL Hole, an Internet connection will be available. It will be a Cable Internet connection provided by Bryan Bruss, hosted by Madison Telecommunications. If a MOAL Party is hosted at a different location, having an internet connection will depend on that location.

We ask that when an Internet connection is available, please only use it when needed. It is provided for downloading updates and patches, joining Internet game servers, and Instant Messaging. The Internet is available for the benefit of everyone at the LAN party. Please use it responsibly! If a gamers abuse their internet access for tasks such as downloading with P2P clients like Kazaa and eMule and hogging bandwidth, their internet privileges will be taken away if they do not cease that activity.

What is the cost?

Admission (per computer):
(Advance payments will not be refunded if you do not show up. If you bring a computer, you may bring a console system free of charge. You may also bring a dedicated server for free.)

Admission (per console):
(You must supply your own system, power strip, and television)

Admission (per additional console player):
(If you would like to bring friends who will be using your XBOX, it is an additional $5.00 per player. Up to 4 players per console!)

Singles Tournaments:
$1.00 per contestant

Team Tournaments:

BAWLS Guarana Beverage:
$2.00 per bottle

MooVitz Candy:
$1.00 per bag

Power cord rental:
$1.00 for the entire weekend

Power strip rental:
$2.00 for the entire weekend

Spectators are not required to pay admission but may not stay overnight.

Cash is the preferred method of payment. Personal checks are also accepted. Online PayPal payments are coming soon!

Who can come to a MOAL Party?

You must be at least 13 years of age or older to attend a MOAL Party event.

Participants must have a MOAL Party waiver signed. If you are under the age of 18, it must be signed by a legal guardian. You can get the waiver at events or from Chris Burcham.

Anyone is invited to come. Spectators are welcome to join us for free! Although, as a spectator, you are required to leave at midnight and may not come back until 6:00AM.

What do I need to bring?

Entrance fee requirements
$10 per PC \ console

Labor Hall Release Waiver
If it is your first time attending a MOAL Party event at the Labor Hall, you must have one of these.

Extra snacks and drinks
We'd like for you to bring some stuff to eat and drink so that we'll have enough. A bag of chips and 12-can case of soda is good enough for us. Get it cheap at DG.

A power strip
You are only allowed to use one electrical receptacle. No UPS devices, please.

Your PC \ console
Your PC or console system must be equipped with a network adapter. If you are bringing a computer, I recommend running a virus scanner and running system utilities before connecting to the network. Laptops are welcome!

Your monitor \ TV
We do not provide TVs for console systems.

Power cords
There will be power cords for rent at $1.00 apiece for the weekend if you forget.

Keyboard, mouse, joystick, controllers, etc.

If you are bringing a computer system, speakers are not allowed. Please use headphones if you want sound.

A mousepad
A mouse pad is recommended, especially for optical mice. Sometimes the patterns on the tables we use interphone with how an optical mouse works.

Software and CD-Rs
Be sure to bring your game CDs and blank discs for backing up files. BRING YOUR O/S, DRIVER, AND RECOVERY CDS!!! You never know when you might need to reload! I recommend storing your software in a CD folder to keep them all in one place and keep better track of them.

Extra cash
You'll need it for BAWLS, MooVitz, and for certain tournaments. We also do occasional food runs. If you want anything, you'll have to chip in.

Blanket, pillow, sleeping bag, etc. + deodorant, toothbrush, etc.
In case you want to find a place to sleep, you might want something more forgiving than the carpet and tile floor. Also toiletry items and a change of clothes would be recommended as we want to frag each other... not gag each other.

A chair
This is not required, but if you'd prefer to sit in your own computer chair, instead of a metal folding chair, bring it.

A case of insomnia
Game until you pass out. Get a good night's sleep before you come.

A good gamer's attitude
The LAN party is all about fun. Be a good sport in the games you play.

Are speakers allowed?

NO!!! You may not use speakers at MOAL Party events! You must use headphones or go without sound! No exceptions. Using speakers will receive a warning on your first offence. The second time will be a warning and you will be asked to unplug your speakers. Third offences will have you or your system removed from the event.

This rule went in to effect after Labor Hall LAN II.

Headphones may be available for rent at the event.

What can't I bring?
Please do not bring any of the following:
  • alcoholic beverages or illegal drugs
  • weapons (guns, knives, etc.)
  • battery backups or UPS devices
  • speaker systems

Use common sense in what you bring. If you believe it is questionable, don't bring it. If you still aren't sure, contact Chris Burcham and ask. You will be removed from the event and will not be given a refund on your admission cost if you bring anything that is unacceptable at the LAN party.

What are the rules?

This is just a list of generals rules. Other rules are expected to be understood. These rules can be changed at any time without notice and are under no limitations.

  1. No speakers are allowed
  2. Use only one electrical receptacle
  3. No pornography
  4. No smoking inside the building. Go outside if you must smoke.
  5. No cheating, hacking, using scripts, etc. are allowed unless specified.
  6. No excessive vulgar language
  7. No fighting or rough-housing
  8. If you are a spectator, you must leave by midnight and may not come back until 6:00 A.M. unless you have been granted permission by the event organizer to stay.
  9. Do not touch anything that doesn't belong to you without permission.

Penalties for breaking rules will result in warnings to removal from the event.

We also print your company's name on our flyers, display your company's products and/or promotional items at our events, and just about anything else you may request!
